People who were once professional and kind become na" There is a group of managers and supervisor who form a network and if you have a problem with one of them be prepared to be treated like garbage by the entire group. HR sides with the manager ever time, they are not concerned for the employee, they know their turnover is massive and they could not care less. HR refuses to move an employee if they don't sync with their management team, despite detailed examples of unprofessional behavior. You get a good manager and it's a better experience, you get a crappy one and your stuck in hell with no way out but finding another place to work. I'm going to miss my kind customers at BBB but the management there and the HR department are a roll of the dice. They used one that doesn’t contain any live viruses instead, it comprises a piece of the virus’s coat. In 2011, his team, led by Kelly Warfield, finally tested an Ebola vaccine on three chimps. Walsh thinks there’s now more appetite for vaccinating wild animals. “It’s very difficult to get anybody to agree to do vaccinations.” But this attitude is waning, as the threat of diseases is becoming clearer. “There was a backlash against her,” says Walsh. In 1966, Jane Goodall stopped a polio epidemic among Tanzanian chimps by hiding an oral polio vaccine in bananas. Historically, conservationists have been happy to protect a species’ habitat or to fight poaching, but they’ve railed against interfering with the animals directly. These orphaned medicines could be used to save wild animals. They’re still years away from passing human trials, and since Ebola is a rare disease that mostly affects poor people in the tropics, a human vaccine may never become a commercial reality. He certainly has plenty to choose from: scientists have developed several potential Ebola vaccines that have protected mice and monkeys against the virus. In 2006, Walsh’s team estimated that recent Ebola outbreaks have killed around a third of the world’s gorilla population-some 5,000 animals in the Republic of the Congo-and a slightly smaller proportion of the world’s wild chimps.įor years, Walsh has argued that we should protect the survivors with vaccines. In the body of a human or ape, it causes severe and fast-burning disease. Under a microscope, the Ebola virus looks like a malevolent knot. Our ape relatives are vulnerable to infections like anthrax, malaria, and respiratory viruses that spill over from human tourists and researchers. The twin threats of poaching and habitat loss are driving the African apes-chimps, bonobos, and gorillas-towards extinction. These scientists were working with chimps to help chimps. At first glance, the study looked like a lot of other medical research, in which drugs that are meant for humans are first tested on other animals. But given all that we've learned about chimpanzees over the last 50 years - and how they keep surprising us - why should we assume that they don't also have transcendent experiences? That would seem to be a tantalizing possibility that's worth considering."Ĭan chimpanzee spirituality be productively explored outside the realm of science? As I told Paulson on the air, an insistence on delving into chimpanzees and the sacred, in my view, says a lot more about us than it does about chimpanzees. In February 2011, a team of scientists led by Peter Walsh at the University of Cambridge injected six captive chimpanzees with an experimental vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus. None of proves that chimpanzees have spiritual experiences or a sense of the sacred. So if spiritual experience among humans is largely beyond the capacity of science to explain, why do we assume that chimpanzee spirituality is strictly a science question? Consciousness remains a huge mystery, and spiritual experience is part of that mystery. "While science can tell us a great deal about the evolutionary benefits of religion - and even certain brain functions that happen during spiritual experiences - it has little to tell us about the nature of the experience itself. Kehoe reached out to me by email to express her regret about how her views on stone-throwing have been presented in the media, including in Paulson's interview, which, she felt, focused disproportionately on the spirituality angle at the expense of other possible explanations that she offered. ![]() We each suggested simpler explanations like apes wishing to impress an audience of other apes, or pure pleasure in aimed throwing at trees.īut then an interesting thing happened. I know that if I were to dissect the spreadsheet, it would probably help me figure out which tasks take more of my time, where I can improve, and which coffee shops I work best at. However, in all transparency, I do not love filling out the Flowtime Chart. I feel like it helps my creativity when brainstorming content and doing tasks that require my mind to be in tip-top creativity mode. It gives me accountability in eliminating distractions and staying focused on my tasks (putting the productivity in productivity hack, am I right?) And I love that I decide when I want to take a break. July 15: So far, I like the Flowtime Technique.I seriously audibly screamed once when it interrupted a blog writing session where the juices were flowing. The research said that tracking certain aspects of your workflow can help you figure out where you work well and with minimal interruption, what tasks fatigue you more quickly, and how long a task typically takes you (including breaks and occasional interruptions). I decided to note these specific things based on research I had done. The total amount of time I took breaks for while doing the task. The total amount of time I worked on the task for.How many interruptions I had while completing the task. After prioritizing what tasks I needed to work on, I used an Excel spreadsheet to create a Flowtime Chart and list my tasks for the day. In the morning, I would look at Monday (my team’s project management software) to view my task timeline and the most important tasks of the day. How did you use the technique day-to-day? However, when you need to engage fully in a task that isn’t as mindless, it is often more effective to work without interruption and refresh yourself on your own terms. The author wrote that “the best productivity technique, like the best food, is personalized.” The Pomodoro Technique is effective in tackling tasks where you don’t need to get into a state of flow (for example, when typing data into a spreadsheet). When researching the Flowtime Technique, I found a quote from a Zapier article that I thought summed up the Flowtime Technique well. This means there are no interruptions for a mandatory break, but you will always have a break when you need one. You are in charge of when and for how long you take breaks. The goal of the Flowtime Technique is to have an uninterrupted-you guessed it-flow. You can use a stopwatch to track how long you work on certain tasks. With the Flowtime Technique, you pick one task to focus on (referred to as “unitasking”) and then just take breaks when you feel they are needed to achieve a balanced workflow. When using the Pomodoro Technique, I found that I would often be in the middle of a task when the timer would go off, which interrupted my train of thought. However, the difference between the Pomodoro and Flowtime Techniques is that the Pomodoro has a set time-25 minutes-for how long you work, with defined short and long breaks in-between the 25-minute segments (reference last month’s blog to see the breakdown). Break up your workday into focused segments. The Flowtime Technique is similar to the Pomodoro Technique, as you: I’ll share the pros and cons of the method, how it compares to the Pomodoro Technique, and the overall effectiveness of the method. ![]() To continue finding the best productivity solution for me, I decided to try out the Flowtime Technique. ![]() In my previous “Finding Power Through Productivity” blog, I wrote about my experience trying out the Pomodoro Technique. ![]() ![]() 2010 - 2013 "CBET Grantee Conference Travel Support" $2,000. When it comes to appearance, this tube-like design comes in plastic and metal options, with a variety of colors for both.īut let’s get into the features that really make this brush stand out. Each brush comes with a handle, top, battery, and cover (or stand depending on how customers wish to use it) to keep the bristles dry and protected when not in use. Starting with Quip, their Adult Electric Toothbrush is all about minimalism and slimming style. From standard brushes to Smart tech devices, we pulled three bestsellers from each brand to take a look at in this Quip vs Sonicare review. With that quick overview of the brands out of the way, we feel its best to dive into products to really take a look at how their inventory compares. From drugstores to Walmart to Amazon, it’s incredibly easy to find this brand and prices depend entirely on the model, ranging from $30 options to $300 ones. When it comes to accessibility, Sonicare is pretty much everywhere. We will say, Amazon prices are much higher than those listed on their brand website, which is far more reasonable. ![]() Quip is available solely online through their website and Amazon. Sonicare’s design leans more towards the standard electric toothbrush design with more durable bodies and replaceable brush tops. All products appear with sleek handles that pop open for refills of floss, gum, mouthwash, and toothbrush heads, leaving the simple two-piece products stunning as always. Quip is not only about simple use, but also a minimalistic style. Sonicare takes these ideas and pushes them a step further with their premium line that introduces guidance via an app, reporting, and sensing technology that automatically adjusts intensity when users press too hard. While they do offer standard electric brushes, Quip also doubles up with their line of Smart brushes that connect to Bluetooth and their app to track brushing, get tips, and earn rewards. Oral hygiene isn’t something for a specific demographic, so they’ve marketed particular brushes for children and adults in addition to general lines of products. With the number of toothbrushes on the market these days, it’s hard to find one to invest in that will do the best job while saving time and effort (we’re all a little lazy, it’s fine). While none of us really look forward to the time it takes to put into proper oral hygiene, we can all agree that it’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked. ![]()
